چکیده

Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE ) observations of the bright binary system Capella (α Aurigae; G1 III + G8 III) reveal a rich emission line spectrum containing neutral and ionic species, among them H i, O i, C iii, Ovi, Svi, Nev and Nevi. In addition the Fexviii 974.85 Å line, formed at temperatures of ≈ 6 × 10 K, is detected. Whereas the chromospheric and transition region emission is dominated by that from the G1 giant, consistent with results from previous ultraviolet observations, Fexviii is formed largely in the G8 giant atmosphere. Line ratios from C iii suggest densities of 2– 8×10 cm, although anomalous line profiles of the λ1176 transition may signal optical depth effects. The hydrogen Lyman series, detected for the first time, displays asymmetric emission consistent with an expanding atmosphere. Elemental Abundances and Ionization States within the Local Interstellar Cloud Derived from HST and FUSE Observations of the Capella Line of Sight

We use ultraviolet spectra of Capella from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) satellites to study interstellar absorption lines from the Local Interstellar Cloud (LIC). Measurements of these lines are used to empirically determine the ionization states of carbon, nitrogen, and silicon in the LIC, for comparison with the predictions of theoretical ...

High Resolution X-Ray Spectra of Capella: Initial Results from the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer

High resolution spectra of the active binary Capella (G8 III + G1 III) covering the energy range 0.4-8.0 keV (1.5-30Å) show a large number of emission lines, demonstrating the performance of the HETGS. A preliminary application of plasma diagnostics provides information on coronal temperatures and densities. Lines arising from different elements in a range of ionization states indicate that Cap...

Coronal density diagnostics with Si X : CHANDRA / LETGS observations of Procyon , α Cen A & B , Capella and ǫ Eri

Received ; accepted – 2 – ABSTRACT Electron density diagnostics based on a line intensity ratio of Si X are applied to the X-ray spectra of Procyon, α Cen A&B, Capella and ǫ Eri measured with the Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (LETGS) combined with High-resolution Camera (HRC) on board the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The ratio R 1 of the intensities of the Si X lines at 50.524Å and...

An investigation of Fe XVI emission lines in solar and stellar EUV and soft X-ray spectra

New fully relativistic calculations of radiative rates and electron impact excitation cross sections for Fexvi are used to determine theoretical emission-line ratios applicable to the 251–361 Å and 32–77 Å portions of the extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) and soft X-ray spectral regions, respectively. A comparison of the EUV results with observations from the Solar Extreme-Ultraviolet Research Telescop...
